Hanji (한지)

Briefly looking at the history of paper, Meng-Yeom(몽염) first developed paper in the Qin Dynasty of China( 진나라, 중국) , and the paper production technology improved by Cai Lun (채륜) in the Later Han Dynasty was introduced to the Korean Peninsular in 105 AD. It is presumed that Hanji (한지) was already used in the Korean Peninsular before Chae Ryun improved paper. Hanji (한지) has been widely recognized for its excellent quality since ancient times. Despite its subtle and soft color, it had the toughness not to tear easily, and it was thin and light, but it was well ventilated and absorbs moisture well, so it was suitable for writing and painting.  It has excellent light-emitting power that makes even the strongest sunlight transparent. Sibjangsaeng-Do (Ten longevity )


 Sibjangsaeng - Do ( 십장생도) , Late Joseon Dynasty, Seoul Museum of History.

It is a folk painting with the theme of ten longevity, and is also called Jangsaeng-Do (장생도) .

Ten symbols of longevity were often given as New Year's gifts by kings to important officials at the beginning of the year. It was mainly used by the upper classes for New Year's greetings and pictures for longevity.

Ten symbols of longevity embody the world of imaginary immortals, and are characterized by maximizing the beauty of colors such as using a lot of garden-style blue -green landscape techniques to describe mountains rocks, and so on.

This painting takes a diagonal composition, with terrestrial creatures on the right and underwater creatures on the left. The mountain is expressed in a way that green is the main color and cobalt color is given as a point.

Against the maroon-colored ground, red pine trees divide the screen, and various ornamental objects are placed in between.

This folding screen with the ten symbols of longevity is a 10 -panel folding screen made in the royal court in the late Joseon Dynasty in the 19th century.

It is evaluated as a valuable material because the background of the collection is clear and the composition, painting technique, coloring, and storage condition are very good.

Ten Longevity Types

Sun, Mountain, Water, Stone, Cloud, Pine Tree, Herb of immortality, Turtle, Crane, Deer.



1. Sun : The sun means the yang of yin and yang. The sun during the day and the moon at night symbolize eternity and immortality.

2. Rock: It means longevity that does not change even in the long years of wind and waves.

3. Cloud : Means the world of immortals. The blooming of clouds was considered an auspicious sign.

4. Sea: Means the source of life and blessing.

5. Pine Tree: It means men's firm incision and is a symbol of trust and faith.

6. Crane: Phoenix, a bird ridden by immortals. Korean Natural Monument NO.202. The lifespan of a crane is usually about 30to 50 years, and is known as a representative long lived animal. In particular, a Siberian white crane named 'Wolf' of the International Crane Foundation of the United States was captured in the early 20th century and was recorded to have lived to be 83 years old until it died in an accident in 1988.

7. Deer: Goodness and peace, the continuously regenerating deer antlers signify eternal life. Deer usually live between 15~20years. Nevertheless, it is because of its horns that continue to grow even after being cut off and its noble appearance.

8. Turtle : A symbol of eternity, wisdom, wealth, and prosperity. Turtles are known as representative long lived animals. They are known to live between 30 and 50years. The oldest living turtle to date was a baby turtle that died to be 188 years old in 1965. In addition, turtles estimated to be between 200 and 500 years old have been found.

9. Herb of Immortality : Means Immortality. There is an anecdote about the herb of immortality, which was ordered by Qin Shi Huang to obtain it. It is said that if you eat it, you will not grow old.
