Literati Painting

Munin-hwa is not a professional painter, but a painting painted by the literati as leisure.

Many literary figures of the Joseon Dynasty also left behind paintings.

Kang, Heian an early literary artist, was reluctant to leave a name for himself as a painter and ordered his descendants to destroy all of his paintings. In the late Joseon Dynasty, as Southern School paintings were introduced from China, more literati painters became active, and they played a leading role in the art scene. Southern school paintings are generally simple and gentle paintings drawn by a nobleman with a noble personality and deep learning, using ink and light colors.

Kang, Sehwang, Lee, insang, Cho, Youngseok, and Shim sajeong are good example. In the 19th cetury, Kim, Jeonghee reached the climax of Joseon's literati painting.

Literature painting is a painting that expresses the artist's feelings, and although it was influenced by China, it is our traditional painting that has unique characteristics of our country.

Regardless of the subject matter, it spans a wide range of fields, and Sagunja(사군자) and landscape paintings are representative. Sagunja means four gentlemen. The four gentlemen are plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo.

Literary painting emphasizes the beauty of simplicity, moderation, and beauty of emptiness, and is also called the art of emptying.
